What is Women in Coffee?

Women in Coffee is Caffè Vergnano's social sustainability project, conceived in 2018 in collaboration with the International Women in Coffee Alliance to support small communities of female coffee producers.

The motivation behind Women in Coffee came from figures, released by the ICO (International Coffee Organization) on International Coffee Day 2018, showing that 25% of coffee farms are led by women and 70% of the workforce in coffee plantations is female. Yet, despite this considerable, positive contribution within the coffee supply chain there is still a strong gender gap in terms of women's access to education, credit and trade.

It was this background that led to the creation of Women in Coffee. Women in Coffee is constantly evolving and growing, supporting projects which promote female empowerment, inclusion, and respect. We now support female social sustainability projects all around the world, each a new chapter in our story of shared values, empowerment, inclusion, culture, kindness, sustainability. And, of course, coffee.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S COFFEE ALLIANCE

Empowering female coffee producers

Every year, together with the ICWA, we select a real-world project to support the role of women in coffee plantations.

In 2019, the first fundraising scheme was launched, achieving the target amount required to start a small coffee roasting company in Valle Hondo, in Santo Domingo, in a plantation where 20 women farmers work. Here, 35% of small producers are women who do not receive economic support for their activities.
